While you can get creative with short hair--styling it in chunky pieces or wearing it slicked back, for instance--there may be times when you just want a sleek, simple look. If you find that blow drying your hair does not make it as impeccably straight as you'd like, try using a flat iron. Flat irons are most often used to tame long locks, but can work wonders for short hair, too. Follow the flat iron technique outlined here to help you straighten not only the surface and longer strands of hair, but even the sections you normally find hard to reach.

Instructions

    1

Turn on your flat iron and allow it to heat up. Comb your hair to get rid of any snarls or tangles that will keep your short hair from looking smooth and shiny.

    2

Squirt a pinch of heat-protective serum onto your palm, rub your hands briskly together and distribute the product throughout your hair. This will help prevent the hot flat iron from damaging your hair. Stay away from the roots to avoid giving your hair a greasy look.

    3

Use a 1/2-inch flat iron for hair that is only about an inch long. If your hair is longer than this or you have sections of hair that are longer than the rest, you can use a 1-inch flat iron. Take a small, fine section of hair and carefully clamp the flat iron close to the scalp before slowly sliding it down. For areas of very short hair or those hard to reach spots, clip back the hair obscuring the area to give you easy access with the flat iron. The best clips for this task are those used in salons; you can purchase them at beauty-supply stores.

    4

Repeat Step 3 for the entire head to straighten your short hair and eliminate the appearance of frizz.
