Hairstyle popularity fluctuates with the popularity of actors and famous singers. As Hollywood stars grace the covers of newsstand papers and hair magazines, admiring fashion-conscious consumers take pictures of the haircuts and styles to their salons to try to get the latest look. To the dismay of many consumers, however, the popular look does not look the same on them. Many stylists recommend consumers identify with a face shape rather than a hairstyle to achieve a popular look and optimize their natural beauty.

Wear a square-shaped hairstyle if you have an oval face. Square shapes highlight the cheekbones.
2Keep hair off of an oval face to accentuate the eyes and balance the length of the nose from a peripheral view. Celebrity stylist Chaz Dean adds fringes around the jawline to create the effect. Straight strands accentuate the length of the face, while soft curls around the face provide balance.
3Feminize a square jawbone by wearing your hair past your shoulders. If you prefer short hair, cut it above the jawline in layers. Accentuate a square jaw by cutting hair at the jawbone line without layers.
4Wear fringed bangs on a square forehead to round it out. Gel short hair up off the face to highlight the square look. High hair on the crown elongates the square face.
5Leave small strands of hair around the top of a square forehead if you want to pull long hair back for a casual look. Hair wisps provide a more rounded, softer appearance.
6Keep straight hair close to a round face and keep strands bust-length to lengthen and slim the face. Add volume to hair at the crown to further elongate a round face. Celebrity hair stylist Shirlena Allen has shown this style is particularly useful for coarse hair types.
7Accentuate and add volume to naturally curly hair around a rounded face. This is in contrast to the advice in Step 6, but celebrity stylist Andy Lecompte demonstrates curly hair worn off the face in long strands also elongates a round face.
8Detract attention from the pointy chin of a heart-shaped face. Wear long bangs and soft waves in shoulder-length hair to round it out. Andy Lecompte recommends soft fringes around the forehead to accentuate the cheeks, and adds hair should be worn away from from the chin.
9Shorten a long face with sweeping fringed bangs. Wear hair above shoulder length. Cut hair in full layered fringes to add width and volume.
