Marine Hairstyles

The US Marine Corps is not very flexible with the hairstyles it allows. There are firm, set-in-stone rules that dictate the acceptable length and style of a Marine's hair.

During basic training, a male Marine is required to have his hair shaved in a signature "high and tight" style. This is a haircut in which the sides of the head are completely shaved and the hair on the top of the head is allowed to grow back. Women only have to follow the gender-specific standards mentioned below.

Once a man is a qualified Marine, he is allowed a bit more hairstyle creativity. Hair must be tapered from the neck and ears, creating a straight line of hair that is flush against the neck, and the ears and collar must not be touched by hair. Sideburns are allowed, but they must be tidy and not go past the middle of the ear. They also need to be tapered in a horizontal line.

Women have more room to negotiate than men, but there are still strict length and tidiness rules. Excessively long hair is not permitted, as the lower edge of the collar is the maximum length allowed. Hair in the front cannot appear under the brim of the Marine's hat. Thus, female Marine hairstyles cannot have bangs. The only permitted adornments are unobtrusive, conservative ponytail holders, barrettes and hair clips. These must be the same color as the hair they are holding.
