The finger wave hairstyle gained popularity in the 1920s and returned on the scene in the 1990s. Finger waves involve creating soft, wave-like ridges partially or entirely throughout the hair by wetting and using a hair gel to shape wave ridges around the index finger, combing hair in opposite directions, like S-curves. The results create a sexy, glamorous, star-like hairdo. Finger waves are great on long or short hair. A few guidelines work well on short hair.
Basics
A couple of techniques exist to achieve finger waves: one involves S-curves back and forth; the other involves pinching ridges between index and forefinger. For the S-curve technique, you'll need a fine-tooth comb to manipulate the hair into a wave pattern. Wetting your hair with water will help waves last longer. Adding hair moisturizer (such as Aphogee Leave-In) will keep hair and scalp from drying out because of the setting lotion, or thick hair gel (such as Ampro Pro Styl) that you will apply to shape and hold the hair.
Getting Started
Thoroughly wet the hair and fully moisturized it then apply gel, combing hair smooth and straight down to each side and parting your hair where you plan to begin the wave, usually off-center. Do not apply too much gel; it will delay drying and may flake or look greasy, depending upon the quality of your hair gel.
Wave One
To begin the first wave, place your pointer finger slightly below the part line, your fingertips toward your forehead. Your elbow will be lifted at a backward angle if you are doing this by yourself. Comb hair forward using your finger as a guide to create the first ridge. Comb excess hair flat down; lift finger from newly created ridge.
Second Wave
To begin the second wave, place pointer finger below newly created ridge wave and index finger above it to secure the first wave ridge. Swoop open end of first wave around your guide finger (lowest finger on your head) and comb hair backward. Again, comb excess hair downward and flat. You have created a complete S-curve.
Technique
Drag or swoop the end of the second ridge from back to front, using your guide finger. You will continue the S-curve pattern until you reach your ear where you can end with a cute sideburn. In effect, you are combing forward then backward then forward again, holding each ridge of the S-curve between your index and pointer fingers, until you move on to the next ridge. Make sure the comb's teeth touch your scalp to gather every strand of hair. Wipe off any excess gel and moisturizer when you are done.
