On your wedding day you want everything to be perfect, including your special hairstyle. Just as you've planned every other detail of your wedding, your hairstyle shouldn't be left to chance on your big day. By following a few simple wedding hair rules, you'll be able to choose a hairstyle that suits your personality, hair type and dress.
Choosing Your Hairstyle
The wedding hairstyle you choose should reflect your style and personality, while complimenting your hair type. Don't try and make your naturally curly hair sleek and straight if you don't wear it that way regularly. You want to look like an enhanced version of yourself walking down the isle, not a stranger. Don't mess with Mother Nature; work with what she gave you. It's more than likely your curls will reappear a few hours into your wedding day, ruining your hairstyle. (see reference 1)
Also, if you have very fine hair, choose a simpler wedding hairstyle. Fine hair often falls flat after a few hours and you want your hair to look great all day long, so don't try and make your hair do something it just can't.
Consider the style of your wedding dress when choosing your hairstyle. A backless dress will be better shown with your hair up and out of the way. If your dress is simple, compliment that look with a sleek wedding hairstyle such as a chignon or French twist (see reference 2 ). Do be careful how much glitter you use in your hairstyle if your dress has very elaborate beading and glitter. Tiaras and jeweled hair accessories look great, but use restraint if your dress is also quite glitzy.
The Consultation
Always visit your stylist for a consultation before your wedding day. During this visit bring at least three pictures of various wedding hairstyles as examples of what you're looking for on your wedding day. A good stylist will make suggestions on how to tailor your chosen wedding hair to your hair type and personal style, so do insist on their input.
Some salons will do a "dry run" hairstyle beforehand. While this is not entirely necessary, it may be a good idea if your chosen wedding hairstyle is quite intricate. Be very vocal about what you like or don't like during the consultation. Don't make your stylist guess at your preferences, or you're not likely to be happy with the results.
Bring with you any headpieces or hair accessories you plan on wearing on your wedding day. No stylist likes to be surprised by a tiara not accounted for in your hairstyle.
The Wedding Day
Never wash your hair on the morning of your wedding. Freshly washed hair is much too slippery to work with and will not hold an updo well. Instead wash your hair the night before and apply a light styling product such as mousse or a styling spray to your hair when damp. This will give the hair some "grip". Your stylist will add more products while creating your updo, but adding a little of your own and letting your hair air dry will help reduce flyaway hairs and frizz. Once your wedding hairstyle is complete, let your stylist be generous with the hairspray. You want that style to stay in place. A spray on shine is also a good idea to help your hair look shiny and healthy in your pictures by reflecting the light (see reference 2).
Wear a large-necked or button up shirt to your hair appointment. Many a bride has had to cut themselves out of a favorite shirt because it wouldn't fit over the finished hairstyle once they got home. Don't make this mistake.
Carry a small travel sized hairspray with you. It may get windy or rainy on your wedding day, so be prepared in case a quick fix is needed. If your hair is prone to frizz choose an anti-humidity hairspray to help block out unwanted moisture. Also, a couple of extra bobby pins stashed somewhere handy, such as a bridesmaid's purse, is always a good idea in case of hair emergencies.
