How to Rat the Hair With a Brush

Hairstyles come and go, but teasing, or ratting, hair has been around since the 1950s beehive hairdo. The technique hasn't changed much, and it is still damaging. However, to get the height and body some modern hairstyles require, ratting with a brush is a standard technique, even among stylists. Unlike some other style techniques, you do not have to be a professional to rat your hair.

Instructions

    1

Blow your hair dry. Wet hair is more easily damaged than dry strands, as is curly hair. Use a flat iron to straighten your hair before you rat it. If you want curls, curl your hair after drying it and before teasing it. Allow your hair to cool, as hot hair breaks easily.

    2

Section your hair into parts you want to rat and parts that don't need the extra volume. Use your hair clips to separate the sections.

    3

Hold a small section of hair, no more than 2 inches thick, and brush through it to remove all tangles. Hold the hair away from your scalp. Use your other hand to "back comb" that section of hair. Start close to the loose ends of your hair and brush toward your scalp in one motion. Repeat until your hair is as big as you want it.

    4

Spray each section of teased hair with your hair spray. Allow it to dry before starting the next section. After all sections are ratted, spray again using firm-hold hairspray.

    5

Unpin the other sections of hair and smooth into place with your hands. Use a shine serum to create a smoother appearance. Complete the look with another layer of hairspray.
