Step-by-Step Hairstyle Instructions for Thick Hair ~ Hair Styling Tips

Everyone is judged to some degree on the hair that they have--hair sends strong messages about lifestyle, personality and hygiene. However, these judgments assume that everyone has to do the same things to get the same fabulous hair, which simply isn't true. Those with thick hair have to work extra hard to get their hair looking good. These people can try a few tricks to raise the bar on any hairstyle they choose.

Before you style your hair, pre-treat it in order to control the frizz and poofy-ness that thick hair tends to have. The easiest way to do this is to apply a defrizzing conditioner when you take a shower. Wash your hair as normal with lukewarm water, then apply the conditioner. Leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse it out. Once you're out of the shower, seal in the moisture on your wet hair by applying some moisturizing hair gel--if your hair is super coarse, use a product with a really thick consistency.

Tips: Let your hair air dry and rinse with cool water instead of warm. This will seal moisture in the cuticles and won't expose your hair to damaging heat.

Once you've gotten your hair shiny and healthy with proper pre-treating, get a layered cut. Layers retain the illusion of volume but actually reduce the amount of hair. Use feathered layering instead of razor layering--razor layering literally is done with a razor blade and thus gives a very sharp edge to the layer, which can look like chunks are cut out of the hair. Keep the layers long enough that you can pull the hair back if you need to do so on a bad hair day.

If you have long hair and don't want to layer, that's fine, but you absolutely must keep your hair well trimmed. Trimming the hair will prevent split ends.

Thick hair usually needs to be controlled, especially if it is short. Good styles to try for controlling thick hair include the following.

1) Cornrows: To do a cornrow, separate the hair into layers. Then simply braid the layers in rows, keeping close to the scalp. Secure with beads or barettes.

2) Side ponytails: Pull all of your hair to one side, combing it into place with your fingers. Secure the hair with a light-textured scarf or hair clip. Keep the ponytail low and loose and let your thick hair cascade naturally over your shoulder.
