Loc Hairstyles ~ Hair Styling Tips

The term "loc" is short for dreadlock, which is a historical hairstyle made popular today by African and Jamaican cultures. Dreadlocks are twisted braid-like strands of hair that are wound and teased to make permanent knotted strands in the hair. Dreadlocks designs can be created with long or short hair on people of any race, culture or decent. Once your hair is "dreaded" you can create several loc hairstyles to enhance and display your personal style.

Similar to the multi-bun hairstyle worn by famous female vocalist Bjork, lock buns create an edgy goth-emo style for dread-locked women. Separate your dreadlocks into several sections--as many and as large as you like--all over your head. Wind each section into little buns, securing them with bobby pins or fashionable hair clips. Create the buns in a uniform fashion to create symmetric designs or place them randomly for wild and less-structured appearance.

If you have longer hair, you can add a Renaissance feel the otherwise exotic hairstyle by incorporating bangs and fringed layers around the face. Before creating the dreadlocks, part a thin section of bangs at the hairline and a few wispy strands around the face. Do not dread these sections. When dreading your hair start from just behind your bangs and create the knots--similar to French braids--moving backwards and away from the face along the top and sides. At the end of the crown begin twisting the strands loose and away from the scalp. This will create a loc hairstyle with a "half up-half down" look.

The Octopus is a loc style with a look that lives up to its name. Pull all of your locs backward and away from the face and secure them with a hairband at the back of the head. Take one loc and wrap it around the hairband several times--to conceal it--until you have only 3 to 4 inches of length left. Secure the strand to your head with a bobby pin and allow the loose end to stick up and away from the newly formed bun. Repeat the steps with each strand until A bun is formed, resembling an octopus with dread-locked "tentacles."
