Ideas for Medium Hairstyles

Men and women both have a huge variety of hair options available to them. Although long and short hairstyles are extremely popular for men and women, there are some benefits that medium-length hair offers that the others cannot. Medium-length hair allows for more styling opportunities than short cuts, while requiring less work to maintain than most longer styles.

The Updo

    The updo---which features hair being put up behind the head for women---is a popular medium-length hairstyle for women. The style can be a formal and professional look and also be cute and charming for casual occasions. The updo allows the face to be brought out, emphasizing the eyes and cheeks since the hair is swept away from the face. Although it can be done in a variety of ways, generally an elastic tie or bobby pin is used to hold the hair back.

Layering

    Layering medium-length hair not only provides a great hairstyle for women, but for men, as well. Stylists cut portions of hair into different lengths to achieve the look. Layering allows the hair to flow freely and naturally. For women, layering brings facial features out, including eyes, lips, cheeks and chin. For men, layering often includes letting the hair naturally fall from the top, or parting it in the middle. Pomade and styling gels can be used for a sleeker look.

Simple Downward Flow

    Medium-length hairstyles for women can simply flow downward with the right haircut. The downward-flow hairstyle allows women to simply let their hair flow naturally---providing a retro and messy look. Avoid using a brush, straightener or curler. Simply apply a pomade or styling gel to damp hair, and then pull it downward with the fingers.

Tapered

    Another popular look for men with medium-length hair is the tapered look that normally accompanies short hair. Many men desire to keep the professional, clean-cut look of short hair. To do this, they taper the sides and back of the hair---essentially matching the shorter style---but keeping the top at a medium length. The top can then be styled multiple ways, including being gelled, combed forward, sideways or even straight back.
