Instructions to Tie a Hair Bow ~ Hair Styling Tips

Hair bows are among the most popular of hair accessories for female girls, teens and women. They make a charming addition to any hairstyle giving it an innocent, girlish appearance. These bows basically consist of a solid or patterned colored fabric or ribbon that is simply tied in the hair as adornment and to hold hair in place. Tying a hair bow is rather simple and requires only a few minute steps.

The easiest way to tie a hair bow is to tie it around an elastic hair band rather than attempting to hold the hair in place while tying the bow. Gather your hair into the desired style using an elastic hair band first. Style your hair into a simply ponytail, a half ponytail, pigtails or however else you wish. Use thin elastic bands so that they will not be seen from beneath the fabric of the hair bow.

Hold the length of fabric or ribbon that is to be tied into your hair so that it is perfectly straight and not twisted. Lift up your ponytail with one hand and place the ribbon beneath the ponytail with the other hand holding the ribbon. Slide the fingers of the hand used to lift up your ponytail along the ribbon to ensure that it does twist as you grasp the other end. With both hands now holding the ends of the ribbon beneath your ponytail, fold one end over the other one, and pull them tight against the ponytail. Create a loop with one end, and then wrap the other end around this loop to create another loop, and pull the two loops outward to create a bow---just as if you were tying a shoe.

Simple hair bows like the one listed in the section above are most ideal for ponytails, buns, pigtails and other up-dos. However, for a particularly decorative half-do, you can create hair bow barrettes. These are especially popular among little girls but are even used among adults as well. Create a hair bow barrette by purchasing a French pinch barrette and a decorative roll of ribbon. Thread a needle with thread matching the ribbon and place the ribbon flat against the smooth back of the barrette. Push the needle down through the end hole of the barrette and through the ribbon, creating a stitch around the hole of the barrette, effectively stitching the ribbon to the barrette. Then create a loop with the ribbon, however tall you want it to be. Wrap the thread around the loop to secure it in place and repeat this process of creating loops and wrapping thread around them along the whole length of the barrette. When you reach the end of the barrette, thread the needle through the end holes of the barrette and ribbon, just as before and tie off the thread to hold the ribbon in place. You can now clip your hair bow barrette in your hair to pull your hair back from your face.
