A cosmetologist is a professional licensed to perform services related to grooming of one's physical appearances. Cosmetologist are trained in all areas of hair, nail and skin care. The qualifications for licensing vary from state to state.

Licence Basics

    Any person practicing the art of cosmetology in the state of Illinois is required to hold a valid state license. A license acts as evidence to your clients and all governing bodies that you are qualified to perform the services being offered.

Time Frame

    Applicants must provide proof of completion of a 1,500-hour course approved by the state board of licensing. Upon completion of the the course students should be able to master permanent waving, hair cutting and the science of hair coloring.

Requirements

    The state of Illinois requires all applicants to be at least 16 years of age. A fee of $190 will be charge for the examination and $45 for the actual license. Students are tested on their knowledge of chemicals, sanitation, safety and hair care.

Warning

    Licensing is contingent upon passing an examination issues by the state of Illinois. Candidates who fail the state exam after three attempts will be required to complete an additional 250 hours course from a licensed cosmetology school.

Reciprocity

    If you hold a valid license for another state, you may be able to transfer your license providing your experience is equivalent to those required by the state of Illinois.
