You no longer need a curling iron and massive amounts of hairspray to get natural-looking waves. Now, flat irons with rounded edges make curling simple. With the right products and the right technique, you can master lustrous messy waves, even if your hair doesn't have a natural curl to it. This style takes time, so do not attempt it if you need to leave your home in less than 15 minutes.

Spray a heat protectant with detangler on your air-dried hair. Spray onto the hair shaft and ends. A detangler will make combing through air-dried hair much easier.
2Wait one minute for the product to dry. You may gently comb through the hair during this time. If your hair naturally curls or waves, comb starting at the ends and work your way up to the scalp. Doing this will avoid breakage from aggressive combing.
3Divide the hair into top and bottom sections and secure the top section with a large hair clip. The bottom section should be slightly thicker than the top section.
4Pull 1- to 2-inch wide sections of hair into your hands and curl outward with your flat iron. To do this, clamp the iron an inch above the ends. Roll outward (away from the face), hold for six seconds and then release. Do this for the entire bottom section of hair. You may wish to skip a few random sections to create the messy, undone result intended for this look.
5Take 1-inch sections from the clip holding the top half of your hair and curl those outward as well. To do this, clamp the iron an inch away from the roots and roll upward toward the root, away from the face. Hold the iron for six seconds and then slowly release the curl. Do this for the entire top section.
6Apply curling mousse to the hair shaft and gently scrunch the hair with fingers. Spray a shine on the hair and shake your head to add a bit more volume. Run your fingers through the hair to distribute the shine spray and finish your messy haphazard hairstyle.
