How to Make Vintage Hairstyles ~ Hair Styling Tips

Those classic hairstyles of the past didn't use curling irons or hair dryers. Instead, the timeless tresses were created with fingers, pins, clips and lots of hairspray. Use the following instructions for three types of vintage hairstyles: pin curls, rag curls and finger waves. All should start with clean hair that is slightly damp.

Instructions

Separate damp hair into narrow sections. Twirl a section of hair around your index finger to create a tight curl.

Push the curl flat against your head. Secure with a clip or bobby pins.

Continue making curls in rows. Alternate the direction of the curl in each row.

Allow the hair to dry for several hours or overnight.

Remove clips or bobby pins. Style the curls by picking them with chopsticks or a pick. Arrange the curls in the style that you want.

Secure some curls to the top of your head or behind your ears. Pin with clips and spray your hair generously with hair spray.

Add flowers or vintage hair accessories to the base of the curl if desired.

Part damp hair and comb down one wide section.

Move your fingers one or two finger-widths down the section. Push the hair to the side to form a wave. Secure the wave with a clip.

Continue down the section of hair, creating waves every 2 fingers or so. Repeat on the remaining sections of hair.

Allow the hair to dry for several hours, then remove the clips. Finish the ends with finger curls at the nape of the neck.

Cut strips of old sheets or clean rags to make rags about 1 inch wide and 5 inches long.

Comb damp hair into sections about an inch wide. Place a rag next to a section of hair so that the rag is about 1 inch above the scalp.

Wrap the strand of hair around the rag in a spiral direction.

Tie the ends of the rag together. Make sure no hair is sticking out.

Repeat on the rest of the sections of hair. Allow to dry, then remove the rags.
