How to Style Hair with Pencils

A bun is the classic way to wear hair up and out of the way when going to work or for a night out on the town. An alternative to the traditional bun can be created by wrapping hair around a sharpened pencil.

Instructions

Pull hair into a high ponytail. While holding the hair with your left hand, pick up a sharpened pencil and insert the pencil sideways through the gathered hair, between the hand and the head.

Grab the pencil and the hair with the right hand. Use the left hand to pull the hair down, looping it behind the pencil, then pull the hair straight up again.

Turn the pencil clockwise until the pencil tip is pointing downward. Push the pencil down through the hair until only the eraser is showing above the hair.

Take the pointed tip of the pencil and carefully lift it so the tip is now pointing up. Push the eraser side down through the hair. The pencil will hold the hair in place, with the eraser at the nape of the neck and the pointed tip at the top of the head.

Put the hair in a bun, then insert one or two pencils haphazardly in the bun's outer layers.

Arrange the hair in a ponytail and secure with a ponytail holder. Insert two pencils criss-crossing between the ponytail holder and the scalp.

Pull hair into a high ponytail. Secure with an elastic band. Use one hand to twist ponytail until hair wraps itself into a circular bun. Weave the pencil through the bun from side to side. Make sure to catch hair on either side of the bun and go through the middle of the hair.

Use bobby pins to secure all of the above hairstyles.
