How to Set Rollers With African American Hair ~ Hair Styling Tips

A roller set for African American hair creates a long lasting hairstyle. Roller set is a hairstyle method many women perform for themselves with each woman perfecting the method for her hair type.

Instructions

Wash and condition hair with your usual products. Apply leave-in conditioner and comb through with the wide-tooth comb to detangle hair. Combing the hair also makes sure the ends are well conditioned.

Part the hair into three long sections lengthwise along the scalp. Separate and hold the two outer sections with hair clips creating a Mohawk look with the remaining loose middle section.

Section off some hair with a rat-tailed comb starting in the front and spray the section with setting lotion, such as Lottabody, diluted or undiluted depending upon the desired stiffness of the curls.

Start at the ends, set the hair on the roller keeping the hair taut, roll the hair backwards away from the face. Continue rolling backwards until about halfway through the section and then begin to roll the hair upward away from the neck.

Secure the rollers in place using curler clips. Clip the rollers to the scalp on either side of the roller. Once you finish the Mohawk section, begin on one of the side sections and repeat the process until the entire head has rollers.

Sit under a hood dryer or allow the hair to air dry overnight. The amount of required dryer time depends on the hair's length, texture and thickness. Most roller sets need at least 30 to 45 minutes to dry completely. Incomplete drying causes the hair to not curl completely and no be as straight at the roots.

Remove rollers and style using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb or brush. Lightly spray with spritz or other holding spray to finish.
