How to Tease Your Hair & Get Big Roots

Big hair comes and big hair goes. Depending upon the timing, you can either look fashionably coiffed or freakishly tall. If big tresses are your thing, you can apply a special technique called "teasing" or "back combing" along with a good, stiff hairspray to help you achieve mountainous peaks. Backcombing is not rocket science, but if you do it just right, your head will look like it's ready to blast off in no time.

Instructions

    1

Start with clean hair. Oily hair or hair with residue may be weighed down and may not respond well to teasing. Comb the hair to remove tangles. Ensure that your hair is dry before you proceed to tease it. Use a flat iron if your hair is very wiry or curly.

    2

Pick up a small triangular parting, approximately 1 inch in thickness, just in front of the crown of your hair. Pull the parting straight up at a 45 degree angle to the head. Hold the hair firmly by the ends without allowing much slack.

    3

Use your comb and push the hair downward against the normal growth pattern. Begin at about two or three inches from the scalp, just at the roots, and use quick, deep strokes. Tease the hair until the section stands up by itself.

    4

Slice off another one inch-thick section of hair just in front of the parting you just teased. Tease that section hair as in "Step 3." Grab the end of new section in addition to the already teased hair to combine the partings into one section so that they stand blended as one piece when fully teased.

    5

Repeat sectioning and teasing the hair partings using slightly less teasing techniques on the sides or lower portion of your hair so that it is well proportioned and doesn't stick straight out.

    6

Check to make sure you have teased all the portions at the roots where you wish to create volume.

    7

Grasp the ends of the sections and comb then lightly or run your palms over them to smooth and blend them together. Alternately, leave the ends loose for an unkempt hairdo.

    8

Finish off the look and secure the teased hair with a stiff hairspray.
