Short & Curly Hairstyles for School ~ Hair Styling Tips

It may seem as if short, curly hair is a pain, but get a good cut, treat it with appropriate products, style it right and it will be a blessing.

First, prepare your hair. There are steps to take with your curly locks to make sassy, kicky, quick styles that look great at school and don't take all morning to fix.

A good cut is worth its price. Even short hair that looks wash-and-wear needs a cut that flatters your face and falls into place.

Luckily, short hair is easy to manage and cutting increases the body. If you aren't an early riser and mornings are rushed to get to school, try a shag; it's short and layered with more layers at the crown than below, so that the hair frames your face and can be styled with minimal fussing.

Keep your locks bouncy, not frizzy, by washing your hair with gentle shampoo every other day or two. Use a deep conditioner, especially on the ends, once a week.

Curly hair tends to be dry, and high heat makes that worse, so go low and cool when using the dryer, with a diffuser, and use hot rollers or irons sparingly.

Never brush; use only a wide tooth comb.

With an easy afro, do what athletes do: cut your curls close to the scalp so that bike helmets, swim caps and dancing don't disarrange your do.

Pigtails are twin ponytails on either side of your head. They keep your hair out of your face, can be dressed up with fab bows and bands and are ready in a few minutes. Tie one below and one above each ear for a foursome.

A daring and bold, wilder do is a Mohawk of curls made of a row of ponytails running from the top down the back of your head.

Make your wavy hair curly with some encouragement.

With pincurls, shampoo and damp dry. Take small locks of hair and twirl them in a circle. Pin in place with a bobby pin. Do this all over your head and let the hair air or blow dry. Take out the pins and fluff the ringlets with your fingers.
For a wet bun, shampoo and towel dry. Add styling gel and run it through the hair with your fingers. Take 8 to 10 strands of damp hair and twirl to the back, securing them in a bun. Pin the bun and let the hair dry. Undo the bun and style the glamorous curls with your fingers. Use a curling iron to finish your jazzy look.

Curly hair is brittle and breaks easily. This creates broken flyaway wisps that can ruin hairstyles and bug you by tickling your face all day. If you have them, tame them with some styling gel.

And if your style calls for hairbands or clips, be gentle! Buy soft or padded elastics or large plastic clips big enough to control your hair without crushing it.
