Teenage boys like to mimic celebrity hairstyles, emulating whatever is popular and what they think will garner the most attention from girls--or the least attention from people who might make fun of them. Being hip and having a certain look is a top priority for teen boys, and male celebrity teenagers can be a helpful guide. The real question to answer, though, is which celebrity your teen most identifies with and whether his hair can be styled the same way.
The Buzz Cut
Always a reliable teenage boy hairstyle, the buzz cut is often worn by some teenager or young celebrity the girls swoon over, be it Josh Hartnett or Channing Tatum. A narrow face and a round, oval-shaped head will help the look--though it's hard to tell how a buzz cut looks until you actually do it. Boys with thicker hair usually carry off this look best, as when the hair is short, you don't necessarily want to see the scalp. Darker skin is also better for this style, as bright white scalps beneath closely shaved hair can sometimes make people look sickly. But it's worth a shot, regardless--remember, it's just hair. And a lot of girls like to run their hands over the short, prickly stubble.
More Extreme Looks
These days, teenage boys are also seeking new looks for their hair, breaking with traditional molds such as the crew cut and buzz, which created a rather uniform look among teenage males in past decades. Extreme looks are coming back with style: Musician Patrick Wolf makes a statement by wearing his hair in an "opposite" fashion, with longer bangs and long hair on top but shorter hair in the back. Actor Elijah Wood has sported the "faux hawk"--a mini Mohawk that's somewhere between punk and Woody Woodpecker but looks cool and complements the symmetry of his face.
Long Hair
While teenage boys have always been concerned not to look anything like a girl, long hair is coming back, largely due to the popularity of Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp in roles where they have long hair, and rock and pop stars who wear their hair long and carefree. To have long hair, a teen will need the dedication to keep it up, at least well enough that it doesn't end up looking ratty. Yet if long hair looks good on him and he's willing to grow it, it's worth trying out. Unless he's a celebrity when he gets older, he may not have the freedom to do it. Besides, many girls love to run their fingers through boys' long hair.
