Adding long layers to your shoulder-length hair will give your hair more bounce by taking away a small amount of weight. Short layers tend to be very trendy and give hair a choppy look. Long layers give your hair more bounce and make it look more voluminous. There are many ways to style shoulder-length hair with layers. Depending on your hair type and your own personal preference, you can create waves or go for a sleek, straight look.
Instructions
Waves

Make sure your hair is freshly shampooed and wet. Squeeze a quarter-sized amount of curl cream into the palm of your hand. If you have very thick hair, you may need to use more.
2Rub the curl cream in your hands to coat your palms. Flip your head upside down and work the cream through your hair, evenly coating the strands with the cream. Focus on the mass of your hair at the back of your head.
3Flip your hair back up and part it as usual. Comb through your hair with a wide-toothed comb to spread the curl cream and remove tangles.
4Tip your head to one side so that the ends of your hair fan out. Scrunch your hair from the tip to the root with your hands, then repeat for the opposite side and the back of your head. Let your hair dry naturally.
5Scrunch the dried hair with your hands to remove any crispiness from the dried product. Separate a 2-inch section of hair from the top of your head. Take a hair straightener with 1- to 2-inch plates and place the hair section in between the iron plates.
6Close the iron plates and flip your wrist up, then down, then up again while sliding the straightener down the hair section. This will accentuate the waves. Keep the straightener moving the entire time. Repeat this for a few more sections from the top of your head.
7Spray your dried hair with a shine spray, following the directions on the bottle.

Squeeze a dime-sized amount of shine serum into your hand after shampooing your hair. Rub your palms together to warm the shine serum. Apply the serum evenly to the lower strands of your hair only, avoiding the root area.
9Squeeze a dime- to quarter-sized amount of heat-protection cream in your hands and rub your palms together. Apply the heat-protection cream to evenly coat your hair strands.
10Comb your wet hair with a wide-toothed comb, parting the hair as usual. Position the round brush underneath your hair and turn the hair dryer on.
11Roll the brush in towards your face while blow-drying your hair. Keep the brush moving. When the first piece of hair is dry, move the brush to the next layer of hair while using the same rolling technique. Do this until all of your hair is dry.
12Place a 1/2-inch-thick section of hair inside the hair straightener plates. Slide the iron down the section, curving your wrist in to slightly round the ends of your hair. Do this for your entire head.
