How to Try Different Hairstyles

It does not matter if you have worn your hair the same way for several years or several hours; trying out a new style can be fun and exciting. It can also be intimidating, especially if you are considering getting your hair cut or colored. Fortunately, plenty of resources out there can help you decide what looks work best with your face before you take the leap and change your hair. Whether you are considering a simple change in your part or a complete change in your look, you can find guidance in magazines, on the Internet and in a salon.

Instructions

    1

Make a scrapbook of hairstyles that appeal to you. Collect several fashion magazines and carefully go through the pages, cutting out pictures of hair that you think look good. After you have amassed several pictures, sort through them and see if all of the pictures that you selected are similar or if several types of hairstyles appeal to you. Paste the pictures into a blank notebook, and write some details next to each picture about exactly what drew your eye, whether it be the color, length or style of the hair.

    2

Keep an eye out for tutorials in these magazines about how to style your hair. Often, fashion magazines will run instructions about how to copy a celebrity's hairstyle with the cut you already have. Trying out these methods is a good way for you to experiment with different looks if you do not want to make a long-term commitment with a new cut or color.

    3

Use the virtual makeover resources available on the Internet on websites like "Seventeen" or "InStyle" to try new hairstyles with your own picture. For these websites, you need to upload a clear photograph of your face. You should be staring straight ahead, with no tilt in your neck, much like a photograph you might find on a driver's license. After you upload your photograph, you can try out hundreds of different hair cuts and colors to see what would look best with your face. Some of the sites even make suggestions for you based on your face shape and skin tone. After you have several looks that please you, print these images out and paste them into your scrapbook.

    4

Schedule an appointment for a consultation with your hairdresser. It is important when you make your appointment that the hairdresser understands that you want a consultation. This service is not always included with your cut, and your hairdresser needs to know that you expect it so that he can plan the day accordingly. Bring your scrapbook to your consultation and go through it with your hairdresser, pointing out which details of every picture you like best. Show your hairdresser your favorite pictures of yourself from your virtual makeover, and get the hairdresser's opinion about what cut, color and style would best work with your face and hair type. Be sure to discuss details, such as how much time you are willing to spend styling your hair every day. Also consider how often you plan to revisit the hairdresser to get your hair dyed or cut.

    5

Have your hairdresser cut your hair in steps if your hair is long and you are ambivalent about cutting it. This means that your hairdresser will only take off a small length at a time, so that you can decide whether you want to go shorter. If you are coloring your hair, choose nonpermanent dye for the first time. This type of dye rinses out completely in six weeks, so if you do not like your new color, you do not have to cut all of your hair off to rid yourself of it. If it suits you, you can return to the hairdresser in six weeks and get your hair dyed permanently.
