Hair can be the ultimate (free) accessory, and for teenagers experimenting with their looks on a daily basis, it serves as an open palette for any occasion. Long hair may be styled casually with a ponytail for a sporting event or pulled into an elegant braid or updo for a fancy party. Both female and male teens can achieve fun, exciting looks for long hair in very little time, usually with products already in your cabinet. Salons can also provide guidance for special cuts, outrageous dye colors and which products to use to best achieve the style.
Fanned Mohawk
Teenagers interested in skateboarding culture, punk and goth music, or those who simply want to express themselves, may be interested in the fanned Mohawk style, which works with long hair--in fact, the longer, the better. Although you must commit to shaving the sides of your head, the top and back are left long. To create the fanned Mohawk, dry your hair and work gel from the root to the ends, pulling it through so the hair stands up straight. Styles can be worn with hair clumped into spikes from the forehead down the center back of the head, or all of the hair worn gelled straight up in the air. The fanned Mohawk washes out in the shower but may be recreated daily.
Harajuku
Asian culture has inspired teens in the United States with its fashion, perfume, makeup and hairstyles. Both female and male teenagers can get the Harajuku look by razor-cutting chunks of their long hair to frame their faces (Harajuku style favors bangs falling in front of the eyes). Wax may be worked in to create a "piecey" look. With parental permission, you can go full Harajuku style by bleaching dark hair (for lighter colored hair, this step is not necessary) and then dying it bright, neon (not-found-in-nature) hair colors, such as flaming red and lavender. The Harajuku cut itself can grow out quickly, but hair dye may be permanent.
Rockabilly
The rockabilly style is inclusive of both female and male teens, perfect for long hair. Male styles include sweeping the hair back from the forehead, then puffing it up with gel, wax or pomade. The higher the height in the front, the more stylish the hair. The sides and the back are kept neat and in line with hair product. Teenage girls may also sport rockabilly style by keeping hair longer in the back than the front and curling their long hair. To achieve rockabilly bangs similar to infamous figure model Bettie Page, keep hair falling from the forehead a little longer than preferred (because it is going to shorten up when curled) and use a large-barrelled curling iron (taking care not to burn the skin around your forehead and eyes). Set bangs with a heavy hair spray.
