A bun is a versatile hairstyle for an adult--its look can range from functional for household chores to sophisticated for a night out. For children, however, it is often a bit more functional. Often used for dance classes and fashion shows, putting a child's hair in a bun is just as easy to do as an adult's--perhaps more so.

Instructions

    1

Comb your child's hair thoroughly. Make sure it is straight and smooth. Spritz it with water to create a more sleek look and make it more pliable. But don't oversaturate or soak her hair.

    2

Use the hair tie to make a ponytail on your child's head. Place the ponytail about where you want the hair bun to lie. For children, this may often depend on how long her hair is. The longer it is, the more position options you have. But it will likely be high on the back of the head.

    3

Twist her ponytail. Once the ponytail has been formed, hold it at the end and twist so that the ponytail becomes more compact and slimmer. Be careful not to hurt the child by pulling or twisting her hair too tightly.

    4

Twist the slim ponytail around the hairband. This will take some time to learn, so practice. Once you get the hang of it, it's fairly easy. Starting at the base of the ponytail, twist it around the hair tie clockwise so that it creates a bun or coil shape (like a cinnamon roll, if you will).

    5

Insert the bobby pins into their hair as you coil it. Push them from the outside into the center of the bun, securing the various layers of the bun. This will ensure that the bun will stay in place and stay tight. After you've completely coiled the hair, place a couple more pins about 45 degrees apart from one another (or at the very least, in three key positions-2 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 10 o'clock) from the outside, angled toward the center.

    6

Spray with hairspray to keep the bun secure and to keep strands of hair from freeing themselves from the bun.

    7

Wrap the hair net around the bun, and secure it with bobby pins as well. It doesn't have to be all the way over the head, just around the bun. This step is optional, but it helps to keep the child from accidentally undoing her hair bun and keeps loose strands of hair in control.

    8

Ask your child to shake her head to make sure that the hair bun is secure and doesn't move much.
