Teen Hairstyles for Dances

Styling your own hair for a dance can be tricky, but with the proper techniques and tools, you can have a flawless hairstyle for homecoming or prom. Remember to practice your hairstyle for a dance before the big night to ensure you can work out any kinks you run into along the way or purchase additional items needed like bobby pins that blend into your hair color.

Loose Bun

A loose bun is a chic look for a teen to wear to a dance. It is a hairstyle that works best when hair has some natural texture, so if your hair is very straight, make sure to wash it only the day before your style it. This allows the hair to accumulate natural oils and have some texture, even if it is stick-straight.

Use a 2-inch curling iron and create loose curls. Work with a 2- to 3-inch section of hair at a time, which will result in loose curls. Once hair is all curled, brush through curls with your fingers to break up any tightness. Add a glossing serum to enhance shine. Create a deep side part with a fine-tooth comb and gather hair at the nape of the neck. Create a ponytail at the nape of the neck, securing hair with a hair elastic in the same color as your own hair. Split the ponytail into two equal sections and loosely wind the hair around the base of the ponytail, securing with bobby pins. Repeat with the remaining section of hair.

Do not worry if a few pieces stick out or the bun is not perfect. This hairstyle is meant for those who love a modern, bohemian look for a dance.

Side Ponytail

A side ponytail doesn't mean the cheesy hairstyle from the '80s. Create a modern look by placing hair in large heated rollers. Work with 2- to 3-inch sections of hair and curl your entire head. Allow rollers to cool 20-30 minutes (or until they are completely cool). Remove rollers and spray with a soft hold hairspray. This will keep the hair touchable and full of movement without an overly coiffed look.

Use a fine tooth come to create a deep side part. Take the hair and create a ponytail at the side of the neck, moving hair in the opposite direction of the side part. The side part works on either side and should be placed where you are most comfortable. Gather hair at the opposite side of the neck and secure with a hair elastic.

Take a 2- to 3-inch section of hair from the underside of the curled ponytail and wind it around the hair elastic. Secure it at the underside of the ponytail with a tonal bobby pin in the same color as your own hair. Spritz once again with soft hold hairspray to lock in this hairstyle for a dance.

Straight Ponytail

A straight ponytail is ideal for those with naturally straight hair. It creates a sleek look that can be highlighted with big earrings for a teen dance.

Start with clean, damp hair and blow dry straight with a paddle brush. Be sure to keep the nozzle pointing downward to reduce frizz and flyaways. Once hair is dry, divide hair into two sections (top and bottom). Work with 2-inch sections of hair at a time and straighten with a ceramic flat iron, which will boost shine. Once hair is all straight, Gather hair into a ponytail at the back of the head. Secure with a hair elastic.

Take a 2- to 3-inch piece of hair from the underside of the ponytail and gently curl with your flat iron by twisting the hair around the barrel of the iron, just as you would with a curling iron. This will make it easy to wind the hair around the hair elastic to cover it and create a finished look. Secure the hair with a few bobby pins at the underside. Spray with a soft hold hair spray to keep the hair touchable while securing the hairstyle.
