How to Make Hair Bows for Cheerleaders

Cheerleaders not only use hair accessories to hold their hair in place but also to complete the uniform appearance of their team. Any type of hair bow -- in the proper team colors -- can be used for this purpose, but a korker bow has a puffy, pom-pom-like appearance. You can purchase korker bows in stores, but making them at home allows you to customize the color and patterns to perfectly match the cheerleaders' uniforms.

Instructions

Make Korker Ribbon

    1

Wrap grosgrain ribbon in the color and width of your choice around a 1/4-inch-diameter wooden dowel. Avoid overlap.

    2

Secure the ends of the ribbon to the wooden dowel with clothespins and place the dowel on a clean baking sheet.

    3

Repeat this step several more times. Create more korker ribbon than you think you will need to ensure a full-looking bow.

    4

Bake the ribbon-wrapped dowels at 275 degrees for 25 minutes.

    5

Turn off the oven but leave the ribbons in it for at least 30 minutes, or until the ribbons are cool to the touch.

    6

Remove the dowels from the oven and remove the clothespins. The ribbons should slide off the dowels easily and will have a corkscrew shape.

Assemble Hair Bow Accessories

    7

Cut korker ribbon into lengths about the same size as the desired diameter of your finished bow. Make a basic korker bow with 20 3-inch lengths of korker ribbon.

    8

Cut an 18-inch length of 1/8-inch-wide ribbon and lay it flat.

    9

Place at least 20 korker ribbon pieces on top of the flat ribbon. Lay the center of each korker ribbon across the ribbon near the center. You can pile the korker ribbons on top of each other if necessary.

    10

Pick up the ends of the flat ribbon and tie a knot to join the centers of all the korker ribbons tightly together. This creates a ball-like poof of the curly ribbons.

    11

Double-knot the ribbon at the center of the ball and add a small dot of hot glue to the knot to prevent it from unraveling.

    12

Tie the ends of the ribbon to an elastic hair band and trim the ends of the ribbon to create a hair-bow ponytail holder. Or, trim the ends of the ribbon and hot glue the korker bow to a plain barrette or hair clip.
