Retro Punk Hairstyles

Punk, which is a style popularized in the 1970s and '80s (and continues today), started with a music scene, much like the "scenesters" of today take inspiration from indie-rock and emo. The punk style represents an attitude of rebellion and although, typically, punks don't want to fit in with the "in" crowd, the punk style is now worn by many.

Probably the most recognizable of the punk styles is the mohawk, which is when your head is shaved completely, except for a thin (an inch or two thick) line of hair from the forehead to the nape of the neck. A mohawk can be any height and is usually spiked, but can also be just straight up with very thick, curly hair or African-American hair. To achieve a tall mohawk, Elmer's glue, egg whites and a lot of gel are used in order to get the hair to stand straight and stay up.

A bi-hawk or tri-hawk is when someone has two or three mohawks separated by a few inches. Because of the amount of time (and gel) it takes to perfect the original mohawk, those with multiple "hawks" that are over six inches tall receive attention for taking the time to perfect two or more. The original mohawk has become so popular that the bi-hawk is a way to break free from the posers in the punk scene.

Liberty Spikes are spikes resembling those on the Statue of Liberty's crown. Each spike is a four-sided pyramid shape, which can be short or very tall. The spikes are also large at the base, usually around 2 by 2 inches. They can cover the entire head, only part of it or just a line like a mohawk. Elmer's glue, egg whites and gel are also used to create these spikes.

The devilock is most notably tied to the band The Misfits. In the 1970s, members began wearing the hairstyle, which consists of a buzzed or short hair with a long strand (maybe an inch thick) pointed down the front center of the forehead. Since that time, other band singers (such as AFI's Davey Havoc) have sported this punk style.
