Quince Hair Gel Recipe

Quinces are fragrant yellow fruits closely related to apples and pears. These fruits are known as pomes, or specialty fruits produced by plants of the family Rosacea. Unlike its relatives, the quince is a good source of pectin and is used primarily for making jams and jellies. However, the seeds of the fruit are also excellent for making hair gel when soaked in water for long periods.

Ingredients

Water and the seeds from one fresh quince are all you need to make your own hair gel. One medium sized fruit should yield about 20 to 25 seeds, which is adequate for making about 2 oz. of gel. Quinces can be difficult to find in some areas of the country. However, they may be grown in the home garden, or the fruit may be purchased at local ethnic food markets, farmer's markets and some well-stocked supermarkets.

Preparation

Core the quince to reach the seeds within by cutting it lengthwise into wedges, similar to coring an apple. Pick out the seeds by hand once you've reached the inside of the core. Discard any excess if more than 25 seeds are harvested, or save them for another batch of hair gel.

Place the seeds in a ceramic or glass container, and pour cup water over the top. Allow the mixture to stand for at least 2 to 3 hours, uncovered. During this time, the quince seeds will produce a clear gelatinous substance. The gel will become thicker the longer the seeds sit in the water. You may leave them overnight if you like your hair gel very thick, or check the mixture periodically until it reaches the desired consistency.

Storage

Once the quince hair gel is ready, transfer it to a low tub or jar for storage. Alternatively, you may pour the mixture into a dark plastic bottle with a spritzer top. Place a lid on the container of choice, label with the contents and store in a cool, dark place until ready to use. The gel will keep for up to three days at room temperature or for up to two weeks in the refrigerator.

Use

To use your quince hair gel, dip out a small amount into the palm of your hand. Apply to clean, dry hair just as you would any other styling gel. If using a spritzer bottle for storage, spray the gel directly into the hair and work in as necessary. Be careful not to use too much, or your hair will appear stiff and sticky. If you have short to medium hair, a dime-sized dollop should be sufficient. Double this amount for long hair.
