Medium length hair, especially straight, medium length hair, has a tendency to look limp and flat. An easy way to add volume at the crown of the head is to tease a small section of the hair to lift the hair away from the crown. Teasing hair was a popular style in the 1970s and 1980s. Teasing the hair around the entire head is a fun way to create an authentic hairstyle for a party or Halloween costume. Teased works with straight and curly hair.
Instructions

Wash and condition the hair with a volumizing or body- building shampoo and conditioner. This will help build up the base of the hair to create a higher base.
2Blow dry the hair. Decide if you want curly or straight hair. If you want straight hair, use a flat iron to straighten the hair, running the straightener through the hair in one-inch sections at a time. If you want curly hair, apply a styling mousse all over the hair and curl as normal. Both styles can look good with medium length hair. Don't worry about curls looking too full. You will break them apart later.
3Clip back the hair that you do not want to tease. Take the hair in one-inch sections. Hold the hair straight up over the head. Place the comb midway down the hair strand. Comb the hair back toward the head using quick strokes. This will cause the small hairs near the crown of the head to tangle slightly, creating a hair bump or cushion that adds volume at the crown of the head. Spray the bump with a small amount of hairspray to hold it in place.
4Add as much volume to the hair as desired. Take a paddle brush and gently brush over the top of the teased hair to replace any flyaway hairs from the top of the head. At this point, if you have curls, break them apart with your fingers to prevent the eighties look. Of course, if you want the eighties look, leave the hair as tightly curled and large as possible. Spray the entire hairstyle with hairspray. The teased hair should stay in place until you comb it out at the end of the day.
