How to Use Barrettes for Medium-Long Hair

Medium-length hair falls between the jaw line and the shoulders. Barrettes are a handy hair accessory when you are styling medium-length hair. They come in two basic types. One is comprised of two curved pieces that hold your hair by clamping it between the top and bottom of the barrette. The second type secures the bottom of the barrette to the top with a clasp, holding your hair in between. Both types can be used in medium-length hair, whether to hold it out of your way or act as a fashion statement.

Instructions

    1

Part your hair on the side and pull the hair from one side to the back or top of your head. Secure with a small to medium-size barrette.

    2

Sweep the hair from the sides, front and top of your head to the back and fasten it high in the back with a barrette large enough to secure it.

    3

Twist the hair from each side. Pull it to the back and secure with a barrette. Leave the back hair loose.

    4

Brush the hair from the front of your head back. Clip it with a barrette at the crown. Use smaller barrettes to hold stray locks back.

    5

French braid your hair in small braids across the top of your head to the crown. Secure with small barrettes.

    6

Braid your hair into two plaits behind your ears. Use barrettes at the bottom to hold the braids together.

    7

Pull back your hair. Divide it into two parts, one above the other; the one on top should be thicker. Use a large barrette to form the top part into a high ponytail. Pull the bottom hair under the ponytail and secure with a smaller barrette the same style and color as the top one. Or, you can use two barrettes of different styles and colors for a more eclectic look.

    8

Form a triple tail. Gather half of your hair into a low ponytail in a large barrette in the middle back of your head. Divide the loose hair under the tail into two equal parts. If your hair is long enough, cross them under the pony tail and clip them with medium-size barrettes. If your hair is not long enough to cross, pull each section of loose hair to either side of the main ponytail and clip with barrettes.

    9

Clip a barrette covered with a large fabric flower or bow to hair you have pulled back from one side to the nape of your neck or the top of your head. Or pull back hair from both sides, roll it under and secure with bobby pins before placing the bow or flower.

    10

Fasten a baby's hair with a miniature barrette made just for a child's super-fine hair. Pull one section to the top of her head or separate the hair into two sections and secure it in the back or at the sides.
