The Best Punk Hairstyles ~ Hair Styling Tips

Punk, a style that was popularized in the 1970s and 1980s, began with a music scene of the same name. The overall punk style represents a rebellious attitude and unconventional or shocking hair styles, sometime accompanied by radical variations of color. Although punks don't like to fit with the "in" crowd, that rebellious style is now worn by many.

The most easily recognizable punk style is the mohawk (also called Mohican). It's when the head is shaved or buzzed, except for a thin line of hair starting at the forehead and extending to the nape of the neck. A mohawk can be any height and is usually spiked, but can also be just straight up.. To achieve an impressively high mohawk, Elmer's glue, egg whites and gel are often used to get the hair to stand straight.

Liberty Spikes resemble those on the Statue of Liberty's crown. Each spike is a four-sided pyramid shape, which is usually tall at the tip. The spikes are also large at the base, usually about 2 inches by 2 inches. They can cover the entire head, only a section of it, or only a line (like a mohawk). The same holding materials are used with this punk style as with mohawks.

A bi- or tri-hawk is when there are two or three (or more) mohawks separated by a few inches of shaved head. Because of the time (and egg whites) it takes to perfect one mohawk, multiple hawks that are more than a few inches in height need (and attract) considerable attention. Because punk has gone in-and-out of fashion, the bi-hawk is a way for "real" punks to distinguish themselves from one-mohawk (or "faux-hawk") posers.

The devilock, which is most notably tied to the punk/horror band The Misfits, began in the 1970s, when members of the band started wearing the hairstyle. The 'do consists of buzzed or short hair and a long strand (maybe an inch or two thick) pointed down the center of the forehead and over the face. Throughout the decades, other band lead singers (like Davey Havoc of AFI) have worn this punk style.

Punk hair isn't all about the style; it's also about the color. While black tends to be a staple shade for this rebellious look, part of the punk attitude is "anything goes," and that means any color, too. Bright reds, pinks, greens, blues or any other color in the color wheel will work on any hairstyle deemed punk-worthy. A combination of colors is common with this style. Spikes may be dyed different colors in a mohawk, or a devilock could be one color and the rest of the hair another, or two bi-hawks may be dyed with rainbow colors---the options are limitless. As long as it pushes the boundaries, whether it's a professional dye job or a DIY project with Kool Aid, any color and any shade works with punk-rock hairstyles.
