How to Put a Bandana in Your Hair

Bandanas, handy multipurpose hair accessories, cover your hair on "bad hair days," protect hair during activities such painting or simply keep hair out of your face. At the beach, a bandana can protect delicate scalps from the sun. In windy environments, bandanas hold hair in place. Bandanas can also be worn decoratively to color coordinate with outfits or show team spirit at school and sporting events. By learning basic basic folding techniques, you can wear your bandanas in a variety of styles.

Place your bandana on a flat surface with the side you want visible facing down. Fold it into a triangle and press the fold to create a deep crease. Wrap the bandana around your head, placing the longest folded edge as close to your forehead as possible. Bend over and tie the bandana in a simple double knot at the base of the skull. This is the classic bandana style. Hair can be word down or in a ponytail or pig tails.

Fold your bandana into a triangle on a flat surface. Starting with the long folded edge, fold over into two-inch sections until the entire bandana is one long two-inch strip. Wrap the bandana around your head like a headband. Bend over and secure at the base of the skull with a double knot. This is a simple bandana headband.

Set your bandana on a flat surface and fold one edge over into a one-inch strip. Continue folding until the entire bandana is a one-inch strip. Secure hair into a ponytail with an elastic hair band. Wrap the bandana around the elastic hair band twice and secure into a double knot. This adds a decorative touch to the basic ponytail.

    4

Secure hair into a bun on the back of your head. Fold your bandana into a triangle, pressing on the fold to create a sharp crease. Wrap the bandana around your head with the longest edge going around the base of your skull, just behind your ears, and the two corners meeting at the top of your head. Secure the two corners into a double knot at the top of your head. Tuck the remaining corner (the point of the triangle) under the knot and secure with bobby pins so the bandana completely covers your bun. Poof bangs up with hairspray for added flair. This creates the retro pin-up look seen on Rosie the Riveter posters.
