How to Twist Your Natural Hair Without it Locking

In an effort to avoid the damaging effects caused by chemicals in the hair, natural hair styles are becoming increasingly popular among women of color. More and more women are discovering the versatility and beauty in wearing styles that maximize the natural texture of African American hair. One of the more popular styles that is easily achieved is the two-strand twist. Twisting your hair is an attractive look that can be casual, dressy or professional. A concern for women wearing temporary twists, however, is that they will inadvertently start the locking process. Learning how to twist your hair and properly remove them is all you really need to know to successfully pull off the style and avoid the threat of locking.

Instructions

    1

Wash and condition your hair. Before you start twisting, you will need to start with a clean head of hair. If your hair tends to be dry, shampoo with a moisturizing shampoo or one that is tailored for your specific haircare needs. After rinsing with warm water, comb a conditioner through your hair and allow it to set for 10 minutes before rinsing with cool water. Towel dry your hair to remove excess water.

    2

Section your hair. Comb through your hair using a wide tooth comb and remove any tangles. Using your fingers or the tail of a rat tail comb, separate a small triangular or square section of your hair. The size of your sections will determine how many twists you'll ultimately have and how thick or thin they will be. Pull the rest of your hair out of the way and pin it or tie it back.

    3

Start twisting the hair. Rub a very light gel into the section of hair from root to tip and divide the section into two equal parts. Holding one part in each hand, begin to twist them together pulling firmly with each completed twist until you reach the ends. Twirl the end between your fingers to ensure that it does not come undone and proceed to separate another equal-sized section. Repeat the twisting process until you have completely twisted your entire head of hair.

    4

Maintain your twists. Your twisted style should last for 2 to 4 weeks if properly maintained. Wear a scarf to bed at night and only gently shampoo your hair to avoid loosening the twists prematurely. To prevent your hair from locking, gently untwist your hair and comb out any tangles or knots that have formed after 2 to 4 weeks. Shampoo and condition as you would normally do.
