Short Mohawk Hairstyles for Black Men ~ Hair Styling Tips

There was a time when the Mohawk hairstyle (that unforgettable cut that left a strip of hair down the middle of the head) was associated more with teenagers, punk rockers, and rough crowds. Those days are gone. Mohawks are now worn by celebrities and short Mohawk hairstyles for black men are currently popular.

Keep the Mohawk razor short. For this look, the sides are cut about a 1/2 inch to 1 inch from the scalp. The hair in the center of the head is about 3 to 4 inches long. The hair is trimmed so that there is a gradual transition between the Mohawk and the hair on the sides of the head. This gives an appearance of having just pressed the hair into a line. It isn't as dramatic as other Mohawk styles, but it adds height and is different enough to attract attention. It works best with wavier, thicker hair that doesn't easily reveal the scalp and which naturally tends to come away from the skin instead of lying flat.

Try the traditional spiked Mohawk---with a twist. Shave the sides of the head, leaving the hair on top 4 to 10 inches long. Apply a relaxant product to the hair so that it can be worked with more easily. Then spike the long hair up with gel but do not create distinct spike divisions. Leave the hair to fall a little bit forward. This creates a messier Mohawk.

Add a braid. For this Mohawk style, you can use both the razor cut Mohawk and the twisted traditional Mohawk. All you need to do is keep a small section of hair at the base of the neck. Braid the hair in a simple braid and secure the end. Then style your Mohawk as normal and swing the braid over your shoulder.

No matter what type of Mohawk you use, you'll need plenty of styling products and, depending on your hair type, relaxants. Over time, these can build up on the hair and rob it of shine and moisture. Make sure that you have this residue removed occasionally in a salon or remove it yourself by using a different brand of shampoo (different shampoos can cut through different solutions). Then revitalize your Mohawk by using a moisturizing conditioner.

If you plan to use hair dye as part of your Mohawk look, remember that hair dye is one of the worst products in terms of drying out hair. It can make your hair brittle over time if you use too much. You may want to consider just dying the tips instead of all your hair, or you can use special styling products that have color added.
