How to Tie Girl's Hair Ribbons

When dressing up a young girl, you may want to add bows to her hair to accessorize. Hair bows for children can be expensive, but with some ribbon and a bit of time you can make your own hair bows. You can create hair bows using all types of ribbons and you can match the ribbon to the little girl's outfit.

Instructions

Tying a Permanent Ribbon

    1

Pick the color of ribbon that you like. A thick ribbon will make a larger hair bow and a thin ribbon will create a smaller bow. If the little girl has thick hair, it is better to go with a larger bow; with thin hair, choose a smaller ribbon.

    2

Cut the ribbon into two pieces. One of the pieces should be 25 inches long and the other piece should be 5 inches long.

    3

Make a loop with the longest piece. Hold the 25 inch piece in your hand and bring each end together, overlapping the ends. Hold this in place with your fingers.

    4

Double the ribbon on itself. Bring the right side loop to the center of the bow and repeat on the left side.

    5

Using a needle and thread, sew the center of the bow together, making sure to attach all folds of the bow.

    6

Tie the second, smaller ribbon around the center of the bow and make a knot.

    7

Trim the excess ribbon from the center bow with scissors to give it a cleaner look.

    8

The bow can be sewn onto a barrette or hair-tie or you can hot glue gun the center of the bow to a metal barrette.

Tying a Temporary Ribbon

    9

Place a ribbon of any length under a braid or ponytail in the girl's hair and make a knot. The hair should not be held by the knot.

    10

Grab the right side of the ribbon and make a loop. Repeat with the right side.

    11

Knot the two loops together to create a bow.
