How to Use Tourmaline Hair Styling Tools

Tourmaline is a type of gemstone popular among mineral collectors and gemstone enthusiasts. Tourmaline is most often used in jewelry manufacturing, but it also has many scientific and technological uses. In recent years, it has become popular for use in hair drying and styling products due to its ability to produce an electrical charge when heated. Unlike metallic hair styling tools, products made with tourmaline are lighter in weight, easier to use and much safer for the hair. Tourmaline hair styling products include hair dryers, straightening irons and curling irons. The benefit to using tourmaline styling products lies in the unique ability of the tools to become extremely hot without damaging the hair. The following steps should be used as a guide to get the most out of your tourmaline hair styling tool.

How to Use Tourmaline Styling Tools

    1

Choose the right tourmaline styling tool for your hair length, texture, thickness and condition. If you have thick, coarse hair, you can buy the product with the highest heat capacity. On the other hand, if your hair is fine and thin, opt for an iron or dryer with lower heat settings. Also, for short hair, a smaller, more compact styling tool is best. If you have medium to long hair, choose an iron with thicker plates or barrels.

    2

Before you begin, make sure that your hair is clean and ready to style. Tourmaline ironing products are safe to use on wet hair, however, for best results remove excess moisture and towel-dry hair before styling with a straightening or curling iron. A tourmaline hair dryer can be used on dry or wet hair.

    3

Style individual strands at a thickness of one-half inch to one inch to ensure best results. If you have extremely curly hair, style individual strands at a thickness of one-half inch or less. Styling one strand at a time will allow you to get more favorable results from your tourmaline styling tool.

    4

Don't rush. Style each strand of hair slowly. When straightening, start close to the root of the hair and slowly slide the iron down the entire length of the hair while applying gentle pressure. Count down for about 10-15 seconds per strand as you straighten. If you are curling your hair, twist a strand of hair completely around the barrel of the curling iron, and hold in place for about 10-20 seconds. For tight curls, take a one-half inch strand of hair and slowly twist it beginning from the tip of the hair all the way up to the root (be careful not to burn your scalp!). For looser curls, take a thicker strand of hair and twist halfway to the root from the tip.
