St. Louis Urban Hairstyles ~ Hair Styling Tips

There are many African American hairstyles that can be worn throughout the year that vary in length, color and upkeep. Side swept bangs, wavy hair extensions and even natural hair are hairstyles that will never go out of style. These styles provide versatility and variety, and are easily worn through St. Louis' seasonal extremes.

Side swept bangs are a classic twist on regular bangs. The hair is parted dramatically on either side instead of closer to the center of the head. This style is trendy, yet practical. Side swept bangs are also easily combined with other styles such as the loose side bun, a high ponytail, or even silky, straight hair. Side swept bangs are perfect for a ride to the top of the Gateway Arch or a Saturday night Cardinals game.

Wavy hair extensions can be worn down for a stylish beach look.

For the wavy look without going to the beach, wavy hair extensions also provide many styling options for all African American hair types. Professionally adding hair extensions increases manageability of hair and decreases the amount of time spent styling hair. Hair extensions can also be worn as a protective style for natural hair during winter months. Most hair extensions don't require much upkeep and are worn for three to five weeks before they should be taken out. There are a variety of styles for hair extensions, including loose ponytails in the summer, up-dos for special occasions and free flowing on that special night out.

Instead of chemically straightening hair every six weeks, natural hair is also an option. After cutting off the straightened ends of the hair and going back to their roots, many African American women have opted for the naturally kinky or curly look. Natural hairstyles include curly afros, two-strand twists, dreadlocks and braids. With proper maintenance, natural hair can grow at a faster rate. Although cutting off all of the straight ends is the beginning of the journey, natural hair has the ability to grow with various curl patterns and textures.
