How to Put Rag Ties in Hair ~ Hair Styling Tips

Oftentimes, you hear that those people with curly hair want straight hair and those with straight hair want curls. Women with straight hair, especially, search for ways to twist their hair into attractive, long-lasting curls. However, perms and curling irons can damage hair and make it brittle and dull. Finger-curling takes forever, as does braiding. One solution is to rag-tie your hair. It's really a very inexpensive and safe way to curl your hair. It also takes very little time if you have the right tools.

Instructions

Buy two inch-wide, 6-inch-long rag strips or make them yourself. Cut up an old cotton sheet or other pliable, natural fiber material. Don't use T-shirts or denim as T-shirt material is difficult to work with, and denim is too stiff.

Wash and condition your hair as normal but don't blow dry. Towel dry your hair so it is still a little damp. Part and comb your hair smooth.

Spray your hair with conditioning spray, starting at the ends of your hair and ending just above your ears. Conditioning spray will make your roots oily if you spray too high. Comb the spray through your hair.

Starting just above your ears, use your thumbs to scoop the top layer of your hair back and up, clipping it to the crown of your head with comb clips. There should still be a thick layer of hair loose over your shoulders.

Separate a one-inch section of hair from the rest, closest to your jawbone. Place the center of a rag strip on top of the section about an inch above the ends. Pull the ends of your hair over the strip and roll the strip up into the section of hair.

Stop rolling about two inches from your scalp, to avoid frizz later, and tie the ends of the strip together. This should form a tight knot of hair. Continue until all of your hair is wrapped this way.

Sleep in the rags or wait several hours. Gently unroll each rag, starting with the ones underneath. Your curls will be a bit tight; don't worry they will loosen throughout the day.
