Indie Hairstyles for Girls ~ Hair Styling Tips

Indie is a term applied to the culture and fashion created independent of corporations or mainstream media. The line between mainstream and indie fashion has been blurred as by magazines such as Nylon promoting street fashion in their articles and by street fashion bloggers such as Backyard Bill. Indie hairstyles are generally more conventional than punk or goth styles and dyed with more natural-looking colors. Indie hair styles for women are typically not as high-maintenance as celebrity or mainstream styles.

A less dramatic version of the Mohawk, hair is kept shorter on the sides of the head and left longer in a center strip running from forehead to nape. The hair can be texturized with molding wax or left in loose tendrils. Another version of this is to cornrow the side hair toward the center where tendrils are curled or left loose.

Many Caucasian indie-style girls grow their hair long to achieve a look reminiscent of hippies, but more fashion-forward. Hair is left to its natural wave or relaxed from a tight curl but rarely straightened flat. The hair is parted down the center or pushed over into a messy side part. Some women wear bangs covering the forehead with this cut. For African-American women with tightly kinked hair, the Bohemian is generally an Afro.

Short hair with or without bangs, which are often side swept, is another popular look for indie girls. Girls with naturally straight hair may use molding wax to add texture and volume to the pixie, while girls with curly hair may sometimes grow their locks slightly longer for a cherub-like look to avoid a puffy head of hair.

As with a traditional bob, an indie bob is trimmed short around the nape of the neck and left longer at the chin. Longer versions are popular for indie girls and variations include straight-across bangs or side-swept bangs. This look works well with curled or straight hair.

Similar to goth styles, scene hairstyles are often dyed black and cut angular and jagged. Short versions of this are more dramatic versions of the pixie, with more asymmetry and jagged edges and overall longer. Long versions of the scenester look have longer pieces of hair on the bottom layer and shorter layers around chin length and toward the top of the head almost like a glam-rock mullet. Many girls straighten their hair to increase the angular effect and may even tease or texturize the top layers for a more dramatic appearance.
