There are a variety of styles for black hair that you can choose from. Celebrity and hair care magazines are full of popular black hairstyles for men and women. With the right styling tools and products, you can change your hair to fit your mood as often as you like.

Weave Styles

Hair weaves give women more styling options. They can provide additional length, more volume and an ability to try out different hair trends without damaging your own hair.

Bonding is a temporary weaving process. It's often used to give volume to hair or add vibrant streaks of color. Tracks of hair are attached to the roots of your hair with a special glue. They are not meant to stay in your hair for longer than a couple of weeks.

Tracking requires that your natural hair be braided to the scalp in a circular pattern. The weave is then sewn into the braids. It can take up to 15 tracks to give you a full head of hair. The tracks loosen as your hair grows, so they should be replaced after two months.

Fusion involves using a device that looks like a hot glue gun to attach weave extensions to your natural hair. This weave technique produces the most authentic look. It is time consuming and costly, but you can wash it and treat it as if it were you own hair.

Dreadlocks and Braids

Dreadlocks and locks are another styling option for men and women. Dreadlocks are appealing to many African-American women because they can wear their natural hair and still create chic updos and other styles with them.

Dreadlocks require maintenance. If you neglect them they become fuzzy and unkempt. Shampoo and condition your hair regularly. Moisturize your hair with a light conditioner like shea butter. Always wrap your hair at night with a silk or satin scarf because cotton pillowcases will dry your hair and attract lint into your dreadlocks.

You can wear braided styles with your natural hair or with extensions. With cornrows a stylist can braid your hair into an up style or leave it down giving you more options. Care for braided hair is essentially the same as for dreadlocks. You should wrap your hair at night with a silk or satin scarf and moisturize your hair with a light oil. Since you may not wash your hair as often, make sure to wipe your scalp periodically with an astringent before you add any oil.

Natural Styles

One of the most popular black hair styles continues to be natural hair. Many black women are choosing to wear natural hairstyles like close cropped haircuts, Bantu knots and twists.

There are endless possibilities to styling natural hair, but keep in mind that African-American hair is fragile. Moisturize your hair regularly with an all natural oil like almond, lavender or vitamin E oil. Wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf at night, use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and make sure to get a trim every six weeks.
