Almost everyone needs to tie up their own hair or someone else's at least once in their lifetime. It's great to know simple ways to keep hair out of your face, off your neck, and looking good. Using several different kinds of hairties and knowing a few different styles is all you need to quickly become a pro.

Choosing a Hairtie

The most basic of hair accessories is the hairtie. It's the one that looks like a thin cloth rubber band. These can be found in varying thicknesses and diameters which will allow for different hair thicknesses, styles, and endurance. The smaller the hairtie, the thinner or less hair is should be used on. Similar to the hairtie is the scrunchie which is both thicker and softer and therefore easier on the hair. The hair bobble is cute for use in kids' hair although is difficult for kids themselves to apply. Hairbands, headbands, and bandanas are good options for keeping hair out of your face.

Methods for Tying Hair

Probably the simplest method for tying up your hair is using a scrunchie or hairtie and pulling your hair through it again and again until it's as snug as you want it. This is a great technique to master since it can be used to create many different styles including a low, high and side ponytail, two pigtails, and even just a half-up ponytail. These looks are simple to do and can create both casual and fancy looks. It's easy to fix up or redo your hair throughout the day if needed. You can also experiment by parting your hair in different places to adjust the styles for one kind of ponytail.

The hairband and headband are very simple as well as being cute and quick. These are both great for keeping your hair down in the back off your face in the front. Simply slide the band back from your forehead while keeping it tucked between your ears and you're in style.

A third simple method is creating a bun and then sticking chopsticks through it to keep it in place. This technique comes in handy when you've worn your hair down but decide you'd rather have it up once you're on the go because even pencils can be used in place of chopsticks.

Tips for Tying Your Hair

Experiment a lot. There are countless styles to be created with your hair. When you start getting bored with your look, look at people's hair around you or celebrities' hair in magazines. Most hairstyles aren't too tricky to figure out on your own.

Never use a rubber band in your hair. It may look just like the hairties made specifically for hair, but it's made of rubber which will catch your hair and then not only hurt to remove but also likely take some of your hair with it.
