How to Wave Your Hair With a Curling Iron

Adding waves to your hair can instantly modernize your image as well as make your hair look soft, supple and oh-so-feminine. If you have naturally straight hair and crave some added body and texture, you can add catwalk-worthy waves in minutes by using a curling iron to style your hair. Unlike rollers, curling irons can be used on all hair types and ultimately will give you more control over your final look.

Instructions

    1

Prepare your hair for styling by washing and drying it before you begin. Waves and curls can be weighed down by excess oil on the scalp, so a clarifying shampoo followed by a light conditioner on the ends is the ideal way to cleanse and condition the hair before styling. Make sure your hair is completely dry before you move on to the next step.

    2

Plug in your curling iron so it can heat up while you section your hair. Ensure that all hair is combed and tangle-free. Part your hair down the center of your head. Create your first section by using your styling comb (or brush) to make a panel that is one inch wide and runs the length of the head, starting from the part at the crown and dividing the hair downwards towards the neck.

    3

Using a styling clip to keep the rest of your hair secured, hold your sectioned panel by the ends and pull it taut, pointing up and away from the roots. Spray lightly with hairspray. Take your curling iron and open the tongs. Still holding the ends of the section of hair, begin to wrap the hair (starting from the root area) around the barrel closest to the handle and coil it around until the ends are at the tip of the curling iron barrel. Close the tongs and hold for five to ten seconds.

    4

Open the tongs slightly when you are ready to release the curl and gently pull the barrel out. If your hair doesn't hold curl well, you can spray the curled section again for extra hold. Create the next one-inch panel moving towards the back of the head and repeat steps 3 and 4. Continue sectioning and curling the hair until the whole head is done.

    5

Use your comb or brush to separate the curled sections and give a natural look to the hair. Starting from the crown of the head, brush the hair from the roots to the tips. This will loosen the waves and allow the hair to move. You also can run your fingers through your hair to break up the waves if you want more texture.

    6

Finish off your hairstyle by using hairspray all over to hold it in place. You also can work a bit of pomade or styling wax through the middle and ends of the hair for a looser, beach-wave look.
