The Mohawk is a classic hairstyle that became popular with punk rockers in the early 80s. The hairstyle has branched out into other counter-culture groups, such as goths, and has even gained popularity with more mainstream groups. There are several different styles of Mohawk, including the classic "fan" Mohawk, liberty spikes and the "faux" hawk.
With the classic and liberty spikes, the wearer shaves the hair from the sides of the head, leaving a band of hair running down the center. This band of hair can be as wide or as narrow as the wearer prefers, but is usually about the width of the eyebrows. The wearer can shave the sides of the head completely bald for a more hardcore look, or leave it clipped close to the head for a softer look.
With the "faux" hawk, which became popular among the more mainstream groups in the 2000s, the wearer does not shave the sides of the head, or only cuts the sides slightly shorter than the top.
The Mohawk can be worn down, but is often spiked up with the help of heavy-duty hair products. In the early days of the Mohawk hairspray, white glue, hair gel and even egg whites were used to achieve the Mohawk's classic shape.

Instructions

Shaving and Prepping the Mohawk

    1

Section off the desired area and use the clippers shave dry hair to the desired length and shape.

    2

Wash the hair to get rid of any dirt, oil hair clippings and product. For a supe- smooth shave, run a wet razor over the shaved sections.

    3

Thoroughly dry the hair with the hair dryer, combing though the hair to make it as straight as possible. If the hair is long and wavy or curly, straighten it further with a flat iron.

The Classic Fan

    4

Flip the hair to one side and saturate the roots, from front to back, with hair spray. It's important to get a lot of product on the roots--they need to be as stiff as possible for the hair to stand up. The hair should be completely wet with product.

    5

Flip the hair to the other side and saturate the roots from that side as well.

    6

Work the hairspray through to the center of the Mohawk, making sure the entire base is soaking wet.

    7

Grab a section of hair, at the front of the head, and pull it taut (as if tightening shoelaces) -- the roots must be as straight as possible. Dry the base, with the hair dryer, until hard.

    8

Repeat step 4 all the way down the back of the head. Re-wet the area, with more hairspray, as needed. At the end, the roots should be hard, while the top is still relatively soft.

    9

Lay down and spread the top of the hair on a piece of cardboard, in a fan formation. Leave the hair on the cardboard, saturate with hairspray, then dry with the hairdryer (applying more hairspray as needed).

    10

When that side is dry, gently peel away the cardboard and place it on the other side of the head. Repeat step 6. The hair should now be standing up in a fan formation.

    11

To preserve the style for several days, saturate the hair with school glue or commercial hair glue, and set with the hairdryer.

Liberty Spikes

    12

Divide the Mohawk into five or six sections, from front to back, with rubber bands.

    13

Remove the rubber band from the first section, completely saturate the roots with hairspray, pull the section taut and dry with the hair dryer.

    14

Saturate the rest of the section with hairspray, shape into a spike and dry with the hair dryer.

    15

Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the rest of the sections. At the end, there should be individual spikes running down the back of the head.

    16

To preserve the style for several days, saturate each spike with glue and set with a hair dryer.

The Long "Faux" Hawk

    17

    Do not shave the head.

    18

Lay head on one side, on a piece of cardboard and brush hair, onto the cardboard, in a fan formation.

    19

Saturate all of the hair with hairspray, and dry with the dryer (applying more hairspray as needed).

    20

Gently peel away the cardboard, turn over and repeat steps 2 & 3 on the other side of the head.

    21

Saturate the finished style with glue and set with the hair dryer.

The Short "Faux"Hawk

    22

Saturate the longer section of hair with hairspray

    23

Pull taut and dry with a hair dryer

    24

If desired, apply glue and set with the hair dryer.
