How to Twist Black People's Hair

Twisting a black person's hair can be done easily in the comfort of your own home. Although it takes ample knowledge of the different texture of hair that African American people possess, the process of twisting hair is still the same. African American hair is extremely versatile. You can twist the hair to achieve a pin-up look or twist the hair so that it can resemble braids. However, the common method of twisting black people's hair is called locking. This is the method where twisting the hair becomes locked into a dread, hence, the name dreadlocks.

Instructions

    1

Shampoo and condition the person's hair. Apply a moisturizer or protector to the hair and scalp. Products such as "Motions Marula Natural Therapy Hair and Scalp Oil" are great because they protect the hair from breakage. Do not allow the hair to dry.

    2

Using a rat-tail comb, part the hair into a small box. The box should not be any bigger than 1 inch across. Take the hair and comb out any knots. Starting at the end of the hair comb upward to the root of the hair. Be careful not to pull the hair. African American hair is very fragile when wet.

    3

Divide the hair into two pieces, and apply styling gel or beeswax to both parts of the hair. Take the gel-applied hair and begin to twist it by overlapping one piece over the other one. In a clockwise motion, continue this process until you reach the end of the hair. Apply styling gel to the end to secure the twist into place.

    4

Continue to twist the remainder of the hair, by completing steps 2 and 3. Once all the hair has been twisted, spray a holding spray such as "Spritz" or "Pump it up" onto the hair to keep the hair from unraveling. Sit the person under the dryer for approximately 15 to 20 minutes until the hair is completely dry.
